Here's how we've optimized our supply chain for future growth

October 8, 2020 | Camille Charluet

Crucial to any successful business is a lean supply chain. Not only can it help you to improve your bottom line, but it can also drive improvements to product quality, sustainability, and meeting customer demand.

At EVBox, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our supply chain efficiency. For years, we controlled our entire supply chain in-house. This was fine for the low volume projects on our plate at the time. However, as our growth accelerated, so too did the multitude of resources required to manage a global supply chain. We quickly learned that in order to prioritize growth, we needed to outsource our supply chain to a capable partner with a global footprint. That’s when we decided to partner with Jabil—a supply chain and manufacturing leader with over 50 years of experience.

Since then, not only have we been able to focus on our core competencies—empowering businesses to build a sustainable future with flexible and scalable EV charging solutions—but we’ve also made significant improvements to our operations. Read on to learn about the changes we’ve made and how these benefit our customers, partners, and the planet.

1. Geared up for high growth

In the past, one of the main issues we faced with our supply chain was a shortage of components from our suppliers. Plenty of people wanted to buy our products; however, the critical shortage of parts really strained our capability to meet this demand. Not only did this increase component prices, but it also lengthened lead times resulting in delays.

Since partnering with Jabil, we’ve been able to scale-up quickly and efficiently to deliver significantly higher production volumes. We’ve seen lines that have been escalated for weeks fixed with just one truckload from Jabil. Not only has this allowed us to cater to OEM customers we previously couldn’t have dreamed of, but it has also shortened lead times meaning our customers and partners get their products faster. The average lead time for the EVBox Elvi, for example, has dropped from 45 to 21 days. We’re now also in the position to support 80 percent of the sales volume from our stocked inventory—a clear indication that we’ve moved past our previous restrictions.

To support our high-growth ambitions and the demand we’re expecting in the next two years, we’re also in the process of diversifying our supplier base. While future supply shortages (such as the one we experienced during COVID-19) are out of our control, we’re now better prepared than ever before.

2. Improved quality control

Working with a company as big as Jabil also allows us to benefit from the company’s resources, skills, technologies, and leverage in the buying market. Jabil's well-established relationships with distributors and exceptional global quality standards means we can provide our customers and partners with higher quality components at more competitive prices. It also means we get prioritization when it comes to things like escalation—processes that used to take a long time.

We also save time and money from having to qualify whether our suppliers will be able to continue supplying with the same quality and reliability when volumes increase. Jabil looks beyond our immediate needs and anticipates future demand so we can confidently meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.

3. Laying the foundations for a more sustainable supply chain

Creating a more sustainable future has always been a part of the EVBox mission. However, producing clean technology alone is not enough. By working with a supply chain leader that adheres to strict social and environmental standards, we’re able to drive improvements to our entire production lifecycle and its impact on the environment.

Recognized as one of America’s most responsible companies in 2020, Jabil is committed to sustainability across all areas of its operations. From meeting or exceeding environmental laws, to resource conservation, waste minimization, water and energy efficiency, and the effective use of raw materials, Jabil helps us to improve our environmental performance and enhance the quality of our products.

While we’ve come a long way in 10 years, we’ve still got a long way to go in terms of supply chain sustainability. That’s why we’ll continue working hard to reduce our business’s impact on nature and future generations.

Looking ahead...

Improving our supply chain is a never-ending activity but we’re already starting to see the benefits of having a partner like Jabil on board. If your business reviews its supply chain and can make changes, the rewards are plentiful. Taking positive action can lead to big savings, improved customer satisfaction, and less damage to our precious planet.
