How to attract and retain top talent with EV chargers

As organisations around the world prepare for a safe return to the office, it’s not just health they need to consider; businesses must also look for ways to ensure employees feel motivated to return in the first place.

While some are ready to return to their desks and interact with colleagues, others may need more convincing. According to the FlexJobs survey of over 2,100 people worldwide, just two percent said they were looking forward to working in an office full-time again. That’s why there’s never been a better time for employers to explore new ways to enhance the employee experience.

At the same time, sustainability has never mattered more in the battle for talent. In fact, today 51 percent of employees will no longer work for a company that doesn’t have strong social or environmental commitments.

One of the ways which forward-thinking businesses are capitalising on this trend and demonstrating their commitment to sustainability is by offering EV charging at the office. Not only does EV charging improve your facility’s image—a top issue on the agenda for facility managers—it can also be a key deciding factor for talent when it comes to choosing where to work. 

From boosting employee satisfaction to reaching your business’s sustainability goals, there are plenty of reasons why adding EV chargers to the office is good for business. So, let’s dive into how exactly EV chargers can help your business attract and retain top talent.

The future is electric

As the global adoption of electric mobility skyrockets, EV chargers are becoming a must-have amenity for the modern workplace.

With more than 45 percent of consumers considering buying an EV, chances are your employees are also considering going electric. Driven by both government regulation and consumer demand, electric vehicles have quickly become a viable alternative and, according to a McKinsey & Company report, the tipping point in passenger EV adoption already happened in 2020. However, more EVs on the road means more demand for charging stations. 

As a result, one thing is for certain: as your employees start to drive EVs, they will begin expecting to be able to charge at work (... if they don’t already). In fact, as we found in our own EVBox research, done alongside research firm Ipsos, 40 percent of EV drivers in Europe already charge their EV at work. Moreover, a further 20 percent indicate that they would like their company to offer EV charging.

Aside from the many advantages EV chargers can bring to your business, EV charging is also a huge benefit for your EV-driving employees, and increases employee retention. Did you know employees who feel their needs are met are 63 percent more likely to stay with the company they work for? What's more, not only is it convenient, offering EV charging actively saves your workforce valuable time and hassle searching for a place to charge.

Top talent is hard to come by

Gone are the days when employers had the upper hand in the job market. Candidates now have a multitude of options and are highly discerning when choosing where they want to work. 

According to a report by PwC on the future of work, the ability to attract, develop, and retain top talent has become a critical business differentiator. However, doing so is easier said than done. Therefore, companies must get creative when it comes to finding ways to seek talent—and that’s where EV chargers come in.

Put the EV in your EVP

What do you offer employees in return for the value they bring to your company, besides a salary that is?

Known as your employee value proposition or EVP, the rewards and benefits you offer candidates consider alongside remuneration are becoming more important for employees when determining whether or not they want to work for your company.

Giving employees the right balance of these benefits is crucial. Not only does it help you stand out from competitors, but it also plays an important part in your employer branding strategy.


Employees want climate-positive action from companies

Providing workplace charging is about more than just offering a service. It’s a declaration that your business is conscious of the fight against climate change. 

Not only can this help your business comply with highly sought-after certifications like LEED and BREEAM—green-building standards candidates look out for when choosing where to work—but it also showcases your business as innovative and prepared for the future of mobility.

Another advantage of having workplace chargers on-site is that they stand out… quite literally. Cars that pass by your business (potential employees and customers) will potentially notice you’ve adopted the latest technology. Plus, by adding custom branding, you can boost the impact even further, linking your logo to a movement that’s contributing to a sustainable future.

Electric vehicle drivers are the talent

The majority of EV drivers are employed full-time, well educated, and around one in three is under 35. Does this demographic sound familiar? It should… these are the candidates your business is looking for.

Millennials are a force to be reckoned with in the workplace, and it has been estimated that they will comprise 75 percent of the global workforce by 2025. But, don’t think it’s business as usual —millennials seek greater purpose and involvement in their company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments than any workforce ever before. Whatever their job description may say, they want to know they are making a difference and they expect their employers to show them the way.

Offering EV charging could be the deciding factor

The reality is: employee expectations are changing. According to research by advisory firm Willis Towers Watson, 58 percent of employees consider a company’s social and environmental commitments when deciding where to work. What’s more, 55 percent of employees would take a salary cut to work for a socially responsible company. 

Future business success relies on identifying and delivering on these evolving expectations. The research cited above puts it eloquently: "The companies that truly embrace their ESG strategy and meaningfully embed it into the foundations and culture of their organisation are those that reap the rewards of greater employee engagement and, ultimately, improved financial success."

So be honest: is your business meeting the needs of your future workforce? Attracting top talent keeps them around for years to come with EV charging—a benefit that’s good for your business and the planet.
